Foods with Low Carbs
If you are on a low carb diet, chances are your trips to the grocery store are going to be a lot different from what they used to be. It's hard to find food low in carbs. Basically, you won't be buying any more convenience foods like macaroni & cheese dinners or other pasta, no more rice and no more bread. Why? Because these foods do not have low carbs.
Since some low carbs diets function under the premise that high protein and high fat food is best, you might be buying steak, bacon, sausage, hamburger and other kinds of meat. Unlike other foods where carbs are added to make up for fat that's removed, meat is an area where you can still get a lot of protein, regardless of the fat content. So, you can get lean cuts of meat and still have excellent results.
Other foods that have low carbs are cheese and eggs. Now when it comes to cheese, you often see low fat or no fat varieties at the grocery store. You might be tempted to go low fat, but the lower the fat content in foods like these, the more carbohydrates it tends to have. So you have to go against your better judgement and go for the full fat versions. The same goes for milk, sour cream and butter (not margarine). So even though you're giving up a lot, you're getting a lot in return when you decide to choose foods with low carbs.
Afraid of the Fat?
Looking for less drastic measures when it comes to carb control? For some people, all that fat can be a deterrent when it comes to a low carb diet. There are lots of drawbacks to dieting this way. Logically, ingesting all that fat can contribute to heart disease. But even making small, subtle changes to these foods that have low carbs can help you get your insulin levels under control and regulate your blood sugar. For example:
- Eat whole grain bread instead of white bread.
- Instead of regular pasta, try whole wheat pasta.
- Avoid foods with refined sugars, fructose or sucrose.
- Instead of white rice, use long grain or brown rice.
- EAT MORE VEGETABLES!
These changes are surprisingly small, but they can make a big difference in your overall health.
