Can You Cut Out Carbohydrates And Still Be Healthy?
Do your homework when it comes to carbohydrates
If you are addicted to carbohydrates, giving them up may be harder than you think. Sure, most of us love a good, juicy steak, or bacon, or cheese, or omelettes. In fact, the ability to eat as many high protein, high fat foods as you want is what convinces most people to try a low carb diet. But you also have to give up a lot of foods, like chocolate cake, mashed potatoes, french fries, spaghetti, pancakes, apple pie and other similar treats.
No more baked potato with your steak. No more bun on your cheeseburger--and forget the fries and milkshake! Believe it or not, you'll get tired of the foods you can have, and it's hard to find foods with low carbohydrates. Can you handle it? Because once you make the decision to go on a low carbohydrate diet to lose weight, there's no turning back--unless, of course, you want to gain the weight back.
- Hooked on carbohydrates? Are all your favorite foods rich in them?
- Then cutting them from your diet may not be as easy as you might think.
- You don't need to eat a single carbohydrate today, do you?
Choose the right carbohydrates instead of nixing all
If you're addicted to carbs and you want to lose weight, change the type of low carb foods you eat. Simple carbs are sugars that are found in foods made with white flour and foods that have refined sugars added. Examples include almost any kind of dessert (except sugar-free desserts), white bread, pasta, white rice and some fruits.
Complex carbohydrates (also referred to as good carbohydrates) also have sugars, but the sugar molecules form longer and more complex chains (hence the term complex). These foods usually have a high fiber content. Because of the fiber and the more complex chain of sugars, you feel full longer and tend to eat less. Foods included in this category include whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, long grain or brown rice, vegetables and some fruits.
When choosing among different diets to lose weight, really weigh the pros and cons. If you think you can give up carbs for good, then a diet might work for you. If not, look at something more balanced, like Weight Watchers.
