Good Carbohydrate Diets
This is the story of Betty and Wilma. After giving birth to their children, both of them had a little weight to lose. Here's how they did it.
A Good Way to Lose Weight
After Betty had her son Bam Bam, she had some weight to lose. She knew her friend Wilma was in the same boat, but Wilma seemed to be losing weight much faster. Betty was discouraged that she was losing weight slower, but she also knew it was more likely that she would keep the weight off this way. Besides, she knew she was eating healthy and not doing any damage to her body. Still, she was curious about what Wilma was doing. So she called her. The conversation went something like this:
Betty: Hello Wilma?
Wilma: Oh, hi Betty! What's up?
Betty: My weight! I still haven't lost all that baby weight. I see you've lost almost all of yours though. How are you doing it? I really need help!
Wilma: Well, I tried a low carbohydrate diet, but Betty, I wouldn't recommend it. I really miss my carbs. In fact, I went off the diet, and I'm gaining weight again faster than ever. I'm afraid the only way I'll lose is sticking with the low carb plan. But my doctor told me that while it's good to cut back on carbs, I'm not doing my body any favors. Not only that, but during the first two weeks, I had these annoying side effects. But Betty, you are losing weight. Are you going to Weight Watchers?
Betty: No, I tried this good carbohydrate diet I read about in a magazine. The article said that people who go ongood carbohydrate diets don't have to give up carbs, they just have to switch the kinds of carbs they eat. I can still have bread and pasta, but I have to give refined foods (like white flour and sugar) the ax.
Wilma: Won't bread and pasta keep you from losing?
Betty: No, because it's whole wheat or whole grain bread and whole wheat pasta. I only get to have them in moderation. But I've learned to love fruit and vegetables more than ever! And I still get lean cuts of meat. Good carbohydrate diets focus on foods that are high in fiber. It takes your body longer to digest them, so you don't get hungry as often and eat less. Plus I'm exercising. I've only dropped one dress size though!
Wilma: Well, are good carbohydrate diets known for working fast?
Betty: Sort of, but not really. At least, not as fast as your low carb diet.
Wilma: Well, I'm about ready to give that the boot and try a good carbohydrate diet. What do you have?
Betty: I start out the day with a bowl of bran flakes, then for my mid-morning snack I have an apple with peanut butter, then at lunch I have a 3 oz. package of baby carrots and a frozen low calorie dinner. In the afternoon I have some grapes. Supper is harder because of Barney, but I try to keep it healthy. We usually choose lean cuts of meat, and instead of potatoes we have sweet potatoes now (baked with a little butter and cinnamon) or instead of rice we have brown rice or long grain rice. And I always fix a healthy vegetable to go with it, like broccoli. It's not a lot different from how I used to eat. Plus the magazine article had a lot of sample menus for good carbohydrate diets. You can copy them if you want.
Wilma: I think I will. It sounds like good carbohydrate diets are healthy, and I really do miss my carbs!
