Good Carbohydrate Diet

If you need to lose weight and are considering a low carbohydrate diet, maybe you should reconsider.

Get the Facts
Before you start any kind of diet, you need to make sure you have all the facts. Some diet plans lead you to believe that they are good carbohydrate diets, but the reality of it is that they don't allow you to have all the carbs you need each day. That being said, most of us do eat too many carbs, or at least, the wrong kinds of carbs. After all, good carbohydrates include high fiber foods, fruits and vegetables. Who ever heard of anyone gaining weight by eating too many apples?

A good carbohydrate diet includes lots of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Why is this better? Because these are digested more slowly than bad carbohdrates. Short term, this means you'll be hungry much sooner after you eat and cause you to have cravings. Also, it can cause your body to create more insulin than it needs, which results in weight gain in the long term.

So what exactly can you eat on a good carbohydrate diet? Whole grain or whole wheat breads, crackers and pasta. Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Long grain or brown rice. Here's an example of a menu for one day on a good carbohydrate diet:

Breakfast:
Cereal with Seeds, Walnuts and Fruit (290 calories)
1 Shredded Wheat biscuit
1/2 cup non-fat milk
1 Tablespoon pumpkin seeds
4 chopped walnuts
1 apple, chopped

Cover wheat biscuit with the milk and top with seeds, chopped nuts and apple.

Mid-Morning Snack:
An orange (70 calories)

Lunch:
Grilled Ham & Swiss on Rye and Fruit (340 calories)
1 slice rye bread or whole wheat bread
1 oz. low-fat Swiss cheese
3 oz. deli ham
1/2 teaspoon honey mustard
4 cherry tomatoes
1 kiwi fruit

1. Toast the bread on one side, under broiler. Spread the non-toasted side with the mustard.
2. Put ham on top, and cover with cheese. Broil until cheese melts.

Afternoon Snack:
Low-fat yogurt with a handful of walnuts or almonds (100 calories)

Dinner:
Broiled Chicken Breast, Lentils and Vegetables (344 calories)
5 oz. skinless, boneless chicken breast
1/2 cup cooked lentils
1 cup fresh or frozen broccoli
1 cup fresh or frozen green beans

1. Spray the chicken with cooking spray and broil until tender.
2. Serve with the cooked lentils and steamed or microwave vegetables.

The total amount of calories for this menu is 1144 calories. You'll notice that all the carbs are good carbs.

Now, some may argue that this type of good carbohydrate diet works because it cuts calories. That's true. Anytime you cut calories, you can lose weight. But the reason a lot of low carbohydrate diets fail is because people eat very fatty foods, and gram for gram, fat has more calories than carbs.

Another reason low carb diets fail is because people get bored with the limited amount of food choices, especially those who were addicted to carbs in the first place. A good carbohydrate diet doesn't make you give up carbs entirely. It just makes you eat better carbs. A good carbohydrate diet is nearly perfect.
