	<description>
Why Low Carb Diets Are So Popular
Low carb diets are a popular way to lose weight because people see how quickly they work. The results are swift and keep people who stick to it looking svelte. It works by severely restricting your intake, which forces your body to use fats and proteins for fuel instead of using other things. They mandate that you should get at least 60% of your daily caloric intake from fat, and less than 10% of your daily calorie intake should come from carbs.

This is scary since everyone knows that fats contribute to heart disease. Besides, for so many years, we were all told that a low fat diet was the only way to lose weight. Then all these low far foods were put on the market, but generally these foods had a high carb content to compensate for the lack of flavor. On a low carb diet, foods that claim to be low fat actually have more carbs, so you're encouraged to use the full fat versions.

Another scary thought--on a low carb diet, you eat until you're full, but you can only eat certain foods that are allowed on the diet, like meats, eggs, poultry, fish, cheese and a small amount of green vegetables. Foods that are never allowed on a diet include anything made with white flour and/or sugar or honey.

Once someone is at the point where they want to maintain the weight they are at, they can have limited amounts of "good carbs." These are carbs that are high in fiber and starch that take longer to digest, thus making you feel full longer. Examples of these foods include:

  Whole grain breads
  Whole wheat pasta
  Long grain or brown rice
  More vegetables
  Most fruits

Don't go into a low carb diet blindly. Do your homework.

There are all kinds of diets that focus on low carbs, but some are more strict than others. Research the different diets before you decide which one is right for you.
