High Carb

In the 80s, low fat diets were thought to be the best way to control heart disease and lose weight. But in the last ten years, low carb, high fat diets have been thought to be the better way to lose weight. But skeptics say that the amount of saturated fat associated with these diets is still bad for your heart. More recently, studies have been done to link high carb diets to cancer, especially breast cancer.

Why a High Carb Diet Can Cause Cancer
Recently, studies have been done that link a high carb diet to breast cancer, colon cancer and cataracts. How? Because the insulin spike that occurs after eating high carb foods is blamed for the growth of tumors. Eating a diet of too many refined carbs sends your blood sugar levels up and down throughout the day, which encourages the growth of cancer.

However, the high carb foods that make up these high carb diets are simple carbs. These are the bad carbs, and they are foods made with refined sugar and white flour. (No wonder cakes, cookies, pies and other desserts are so bad for you.) So high carb diets that include these foods, as well as foods like white bread, regular pasta, white rice and flour tortillas contribute to these kinds of cancer.

So what's a person to do? Well, a low carb diet isn't necessarily the answer. You need 130 grams of carbs a day to feed your body--and especially your brain. Carbs are the only nutrient that can feed the brain, in fact. What you should do is cut back on refined sugar and foods that are made with white flour. But don't think it's the end--you can still have carbs! You just have to choose the right carbs, which are complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are found in foods made with whole grains and whole wheat flour, and foods with a lot of fiber. Complex carbohydrates can be found in most fruits and vegetables, whole wheat and whole grain breads, whole grain cereals, whole wheat flour, whole wheat tortillas and brown rice.

If your diet is a high carb diet made up of foods with refined sugars and white flour, try replacing your white bread with whole wheat or whole grain bread. Instead of eating frosted flakes, have bran flakes. Instead of regular pasta, try whole wheat. Instead of white rice, have brown. The differences in taste are practically non-existant. And filling up on fruits and vegetables is the absolute best thing you can do because they are full of cancer-fighting antioxidants. These foods, combined with some lean protein here and there will make up a balanced diet, and a balanced diet plus a little moderation will help you live a long and healthy life.
