High Carb Diet
The popularity of low carb dieting has many people reevaluating their high carb lifestyles. In a way, that's a good thing. Most of us eat between 225-250 grams of carbs a day, but we only need 130. But most low carb diets only allow you to have 60 grams a day during the ongoing weight loss phase. This isn't enough carbs. The keys to good health and weight loss are balance, moderation and making sure you eat the right carbs.
Healthy High Carb Diets
A high carb diet isn't even an actual diet. It's the opposite of a low carb diet, for sure. But most people eat a high carb diet without even realizing it until they want to lose weight. Then they realize that they are eating the kinds of carbs that can contribute not only to weight gain, but a host of other problems, including increasing their risk for colon cancer, breast cancer and cataracs. But a high carb diet is only bad if you eat large amounts of refined carbs, not complex carbs. In fact, Most people who find themselves on a high carb diet find that they eat a lot of white bread (this can include bagels, waffles, pancakes, muffins, biscuits....you name it), a lot of pasta, a lot of white rice and possibly a lot of desserts. These foods are the foods in high carb diets that are bad for you.
Healthier choices include whole wheat or whole grain breads and bagels, whole wheat pastas, brown rice and vegetables and fruits that contain lots of cancer-fighting antioxidants. A high carb diet rich in these foods, with a little lean protein and dairy thrown in almost insures good health.
Although low carb diets are popular since they seem to work (and seem to work fast) many people simply can't bring themselves to be on a low carb diet. However, most still need to reduce their carb intake. To get started, eat like you normally do for a week and keep track of your carb intake. You might be surprised at how many carbs you eat in a day. Whatever that number is, try to change it to 130 grams a day. In addition, these simple changes in your diet will still give your body the carbs it needs without sacrificing taste.
